February 2017 Links I Love for Fitness Instructors

Shay Mitchell's Workout for Fitness Instructors

February was a fun month for me. I got to share resistance band workouts and how I became a spinning instructor with my favorite fitness instructors and enthusiasts (yes, that’s you :)). On a personal note, I got to go bridesmaids’ dress shopping with my gals and celebrate National Margarita Day/Presidents’ Day with friends. My wedding is this October, so buckle your seat belts because it’s going to be a wild ride until then, but I will continue to post most Mondays and Wednesdays in between planning.

I may have been busy this month, but that didn’t stop me from keeping up on the latest fitness tips and trends. I pulled together a list of my favorite articles for fitness instructors, so you can easily keep up on what’s happening in the health, wellness and exercise industry.

Here’s a roundup of 10 February articles that fitness instructors and enthusiasts should read:

  1. Shay Mitchell (or should I say SLAY Mitchell?) recently posted her workout on Instagram and it is straight fire. SELF broke down all the moves in the video here. Also, those braids?! #GOALS.
  2. How to pack on muscle with eccentric exercises — I love seeing articles that teach the body mechanics behind exercise.
  3. Refinery29’s hip dip plank exercise. I anticipate group fitness participants bringing their booty too high in the air for this one, so something you’ll want to monitor when you introduce in your next Group X class.
  4. I have yet to try an Orangetheory Fitness class, but this article points out all the reasons I want to go: “Orangetheory Fitness Wants to Shame Your Half-Assed Workouts Out of Existence”
  5. Why Shape Magazine’s fitness director Jaclyn Emerick wakes up at 5 a.m. everyday. Advice for anyone looking to become a morning person.
  6. Fun Lower-body exercises to add to your fitness routine for dynamic balance.
  7. On days where you need some serious #fitspo, check out these 28 black fitness pros you should be following on Instagram.
  8. 5 creative body-weight exercises to mix things up.
  9. My kind of Valentine’s Day love: why exercise is good for the heart.
  10. And, in case you missed it, my most popular blog post from last month was this Valentine’s Day spin playlist. I’ll tell you, it was a big hit with my spinning classes!

Early Black Friday Sales for Fitness Instructors

Under Armour Black Friday Sales Ad

While most of us are looking forward to the turkey, stuffing and rest of the delicious Thanksgiving meal in store for us this week, it’s also a good time to start scoping out those Black Friday sales already available online. I wait all year to see what discounts will be available at my favorite fitness brands on Black Friday, and this year looks like it won’t disappoint. I’ve looked low and high for a good deal, and have compiled my favorite sales (so far!) that are perfect for fitness instructors.

Here are a few Black Friday sales at popular fitness and athletic stores this year.

Big 5 Black Friday Sales: 25% off select Nike apparel and shoes

According to the website, the rest of the ad “breaks” on Nov. 24. But, we can see that Big 5 will have select Nike gear on a 25 percent off sale. The ad also includes gym bags for $15.99 and up, slider sandals for $20 and lots of workout and “athleisure” clothes on sale.

Dick’s Sporting Goods Black Friday Sales: 20% off your order + free shipping

I have a feeling the price will fluctuate this week, but Dick’s is currently having a 20 percent off sale PLUS free shipping. One of my favorite items on sale are these Under Armour Women’s Base 2.0 Cropped Leggings. I would be hesitant to order them online, since I’m always worried about capri pants being see-through, but might be a good option to give as a gift.

DIck's Sporting Goods Black Friday Sales Capris

Under Armour Black Friday Sales: 25% off select gear + free shipping

Again, not sure if this discount will change, but UA is currently having a 25 percent off sale on select gear, along with free shipping.

ACE Fitness Black Friday Sales: $200 off select personal trainer study programs

If you’re interested in becoming a personal trainer, ACE Fitness has slashed the cost of its premium personal trainer course. I’d stay tuned for what other discounts may be popping up later this week, but definitely something to keep in mind if you like the additional study materials to help you prepare for the exam.

SCW Fitness Black Friday Sales: 20% off all online fitness certifications

I’m really hoping that SCW will offer a discount on its Mania fitness conventions, but in the meantime, it is offering 20 percent off its online fitness certifications.

As you’re browsing your favorite fitness sites, be sure to keep a look out for great Black Friday sales this week, as I’m sure more will pop up as the week goes on. For more ideas, check out the group exercise ideas and tips page.

August Links I Love for Fitness Instructors

One of the fitness instructors holding a water bottle

I’m sure fitness instructors and participants alike can agree that August flew by! It feels like I blinked and now we’re in September. When the month goes by so quickly, it’s hard to keep up with the constant flow of new topics and trends circulating the web. So, I’ve put together some of my favorite articles from August to help Group X instructors keep up with the latest and greatest in the fitness industry. That way, fitness instructors can modify their workout routines, playlists and cueing accordingly.

From analyzing the long-term effects of Olympic athletes’ training regimens to acknowledging that we don’t have to like all types of exercise, here’s a look at some of the top August articles for fitness instructors.

  1. An argument for why women should strength train, in addition to cardio.
  2. One personal trainer shares why it’s okay love fitness and hate running — a philosophy that personally hits close to home.
  3. Erin Bailey’s viral post speaking out against harassment that women face in the gym and beyond.
  4. A new study shows that intense exercise does not produce long-term damage to the heart, diverging from a previous study that shows short-term (and seemingly reparable!) damage immediately following a race.
  5. Why joining an expensive gym may be good motivation to work out.
  6. How fitness instructors and personal trainers can get clients hooked.
  7. The advice personal trainers always tell their clients.
  8. Chris Freytag’s Get Healthy U team compares prices at Trader Joe’s vs. Target.
  9. Women’s Health Fitness Director Jen Ator shares 10 single dumbbell ab exercises.

As you can see, August had some really fascinating articles for fitness instructors. Hopefully you found some interesting tidbit that you can share with your Group X classes, whether it’s a new exercise idea or a motivational cue.

July Links I Love for Fitness Instructors

Fitness Instructors running on a city street

Fitness instructors need to stay up on the latest research and trending news happening each month. We are considered experts in our craft, and keeping up-to-date on trends comes with that responsibility. Plus, we can share new workouts, motivational cues and exercise research with the participants in our group fitness classes in order to keep them engaged, and ultimately coming back for more each week.

While articles crop up every day with new information, workouts and tricks to try, we need to sift through a lot of content to find the ones worth reading, especially in the fitness industry. To save you a bit of time, I’ve gone through and pulled some of my favorite articles from last month.

From advice for Group X participants to a new study about the effectiveness of lifting lighter weights, here are a few interesting articles from July worth the read.

  1. An answer to the age-old question: should you lift lighter or heavier weights? This one’s especially important for Group X classes with limited dumbbell options.
  2. 5 signs that a group fitness class is too difficult. Great information for participants, plus call-outs for fitness instructors to keep in mind during class.
  3. A new formula for determining how long you need to exercise to offset the perils of sitting at your desk all day.
  4. Tips for feeling more energized, broken down between morning, afternoon and evening advice.
  5. A fun plank variation that targets the obliques for fitness instructors to try in their next class.
  6. While women are hopping on the body positivity movement, men are getting left behind. Here’s a deep dive into how that’s hindering the fitness experience for men.

What Can Fitness Instructors Say to Those Scared of Group X Classes?

Group of women talking about their first Group X class

As a Group X instructor, we typically want everyone else to love fitness as much as we do. One of our biggest responsibilities as instructors is to find understanding and patience as each person finds their way on their fitness journey. Not everyone is going to love fitness like we do. Great instructors get that and are able to adapt their mindset to best support each participant’s unique experience.

Last week, we talked about how many people think of the gym like a not-so-fun house. Gyms can be a scary place, especially for people that are new to the fitness industry. How can we as instructors acknowledge these fears while still encouraging new folks to come to your class?

Here are a few ideas to help new participants face their fears and take their first Group X class.

Group X is not the end of the journey — it’s part of the journey.

Sometimes when I tell someone that I teach Group X classes, they’ll respond that they are working to lose weight and once they do, then they can come to my class. They’re treating group exercise classes like a reward that they can only access once they’ve lost weight or gained muscle, etc. However, Group X classes are geared towards helping to make exercise fun and challenging, which might be the reason they’re having such a hard time working out in the first place.

Yes, I get that you won’t be the fittest person in the room, but nobody is going to judge you for being there. The participants in a group exercise class are almost always supportive and encouraging of one another. If not, they usually keep to themselves for some “me” time. Everyone comes to class because they like to be there and they like the workout that the instructor provides. Nobody spends any time making others feel bad.

If you are just starting your fitness journey, take advantage of the modifications that the instructor suggests. The instructor is not just blabbering on because he or she enjoys it. We want to provide a good workout for everyone in the room and if we provide you with options, that’s because we want you to take advantage of them.

Everybody’s too busy looking at themselves to notice you.

The “spotlight effect” is a psychological term that means that people tend to believe they are noticed more than they really are. For example, if you wore two mismatched shoes to work very few people would probably notice (unless you point it out, of course). But, in the meantime, you may be stressing yourself out, worrying that everyone is probably laughing at your shoes.

That same principle is the case in Group X classes. Most people are so busy looking at themselves in the mirror and trying to get their form right, that they don’t even notice what you’re doing. I consider this a good thing, because you can take breaks or use whatever resistance or weights you want and nobody will care.

Of course, the instructor will notice you and will likely come around to say hi, adjust your form and answer any questions. But, that feeling that everyone is going to be silently judging your every move in a Group X class is all just in your head.

We all know plenty of people that have never been to a Group X class, but would like to someday. As instructors, it’s great if we’re able to alleviate some of those fears, when possible. However, even these comments won’t convince everyone to walk into their local gym tomorrow. So, be kind and considerate as folks work through their process. Forcing them into a class they don’t want to take is not going to end well. Rather, let them come join your class on their terms. Maybe you’ll even get a lifelong member out of it.

The Father’s Day Gift Guide for Group X Instructors

Father's Day Gift Guide for Group X Instructors

I’m sure most Group X dads out there are tired of getting striped ties and coffee mugs for Father’s Day. For those kids looking for what to get their fitness junkie fathers — or for the dads wanting to share a few hints — I put together the below Father’s Day gift guide.

Before we dive in, you’ll want to check out my Mother’s Day gift guide that has some unique ideas for moms and dads, like a massage or a pass to a local fitness convention. If those suggestions don’t do it for you, here are a few more ideas to consider.

A monthly meat subscription service

Carnivore Club logo

Obviously, if your dad is a vegan, vegetarian or has other dietary restrictions, don’t buy him meat. For every other fitness fanatic, yummy protein is always a crowd pleaser. Meat subscription services, like Carnivore Club or Butcher Box, look like a fun gift for protein lovers.

If you have an awesome local butcher, you can also consider picking up some meat and grilling it yourself to make a special meal for your dad.

A monthly snack subscription service

Graze logo

There are also a few snack subscription services out there that look good, like Graze or Mantry. These are a great way to add some variety to your dad’s typical snack routine.

Fitness clothes

Under Armour shirt from Sports Authority

[$27.99, Sports Authority]

It’s always fun to get new exercise clothes. Sports Authority has been having a going out of business sale, with everything up to 30 percent off.

Heart rate monitor (or other fitness gadget)

Heart Rate On a Cartoon EKG

Many gyms and fitness centers have equipment, like spin bikes and treadmills, that pare with select heart rate monitors. Some gyms even have score boards hung up that showcase users’ activities by calculating their effort as a percent of their heart rate max.

Do some digging to see if your father already has a heart rate monitor. If not, call up the gym he works at to ask the manager or front desk staff what heart rate monitors are compatible with their equipment.

Hope this Father’s Day gift guide helps, and wishing all the Group X dads out there a happy Father’s Day!
