Some of my all-time FAVORITE 90s workout songs to put into an indoor cycling playlist and routine are alternative rock songs. These songs are high-energy with a strong beat, strong lyrics, and just the right dash of emotional impact. This indoor cycling routine has some of my favorite 90s alt rock artists: Green Day, No Doubt, blink-182, and Weezer.
Reminder: I like to teach my cycling classes in a series of exercises that we do 2-4 times through. I pick a couple exercises to make up the series, and we stick to it throughout the class. That way, participants know what to expect, so they can go big when they’re supposed to and not hold back for fear of another interval around the corner.
The Series (60-minute class)
- Song 1: Climb from moderate intensity to hard. 30-second breathless interval to finish.
- Song 2: Climb from moderate intensity to hard (allowing for sprint recovery in beginning). 45-second breathless interval to finish.
- Song 3: Climb from moderate intensity to hard (allowing for sprint recovery in beginning). 60-second breathless interval to finish.
- Song 4: Surprise sprints. (Surprise riders with an interval length, i.e. 30-second breathless, go!)
- Song 5: Pyramid RPM Drill. Do a 30-second interval at each intensity: Moderate, Hard, Breathless, Hard, Moderate. Maintain resistance and only change RPM / speed.
- Song 6: Pyramid Resistance Drill. Do a 45-second interval at each intensity: Moderate, Hard, Breathless, Hard, Moderate. Maintain RPM / speed and only increase resistance.
- Song 7: Pyramid Drill (mix RPM and resistance). Do a 30-second interval at each intensity: Moderate, Hard, Breathless, Hard, Moderate. Use both RPM / speed and resistance to change intensity.
- Song 8: Surprise sprints.
